The very popular Rediscovering Portland Exhibition recently held at the Portland Arts Centre can now be viewed online.
The exhibition featuring 39 photos of Portland as it was between 1890 and 1910 was one of the most successful exhibitions ever held at the Portland Arts Centre, attracting hundreds of people from Portland, around the Shire as well as visitors to Portland.
The images, which were donated to Council’s Cultural collection by Mr Cor Melis, depict the changing face of Portland’s streetscapes, shoreline and harbour; how people lived, travelled and spent their leisure time; and the beauty of the natural landscape in and around Portland.
Council also received in-kind support in mounting the exhibition from the Portland Family History Group and Portland Historical Society who assisted the Cultural Collection Officer in selecting images to create the story, and in the sharing of information that was included to complement the photographs.
Glenelg Shire Council gratefully acknowledges the support of the Victorian Government through the Community Support Fund and the Public Record Office of Victoria for making this project possible.
Send the link to friends of Portland anywhere in the world so they don't miss out on seeing these wonderful photos.
